ARTICLE 5: Condition 5 of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI)

As part of our series of articles discussing POPI, in this article we provide insight into the requirements set out in Condition 5.

Condition 5: Quality of Information

 Insight: This condition of POPI requires organisations to have controls in place to ensure that personal information collected, processed and stored is accurate, complete and not misleading. This applies to manual collection as well as electronic/ automated collection.

* Consider the impacts of processing inaccurate information in your organisation a part from POPI requirements. E.g. operational impact of continuously correcting information, completing transactions using incorrect data, unreliable research results etc.

A further requirement of this condition is that persons whose personal information is processed by organisations must have an effective mechanism to view, verify, update and delete (within reasonable legal boundaries) such information.
